With the China-spec car fully revealed, here’s the lowdown on all we know about the 2020 sedan coming to India

  • The car was fully revealed in China, India launch timeline not announced yet.
  • Features all-new front and rear design and upmarket interior features.
  • Likely to be launched at Auto Expo 2020.
  • Prices are expected to be higher than the current-generation Verna.

Hyundai Motor India unveiled the facelifted Verna sedan in 2017, and it is still one of the best-looking cars in its segment. But the company is all set to up its game even further with the launch of new models like the 2020 Creta and the facelifted Verna. The car has already been revealed in China, and is likely to come with few changes to India. Changes to the front and rear fascia and BS6-compliant engines will help the car to compete with other sedans in its segment, like the soon-to-be-updated Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, and the Toyota Yaris. Prices for the upcoming Verna are expected to be higher than the current model’s Rs 8.18 lakh to Rs 14 lakh price bracket.

Changes to the exterior are limited to the front and rear fascia; the profile remains the same. Up front, a larger grille with bigger headlamps sit above a redesigned bumper. At the rear, the design bears resemblance to the Hyundai ix25 - a wide strip which may either be reflective or house LEDs, runs along the width of the tailgate. The bumper has sharp kinks on either side, and a silver strip is placed at the bottom edge.

On the inside, the new steering wheel is different from the one we first saw in the Venue, and have since seen in both the Grand i10 Nios as well as the upcoming Creta. Large centre air vents resemble the previous-generation Sonata. The new car comes with a large touchscreen infotainment screen which floats above the audio controls.

Like the upcoming Creta, we expect Hyundai to unveil the 2020 Verna at Auto Expo 2020. However, the launch timeline is likely to be different for the new cars. While the current-generation Verna costs between Rs 8.18 lakh to Rs 14.1 lakh, expect the company to charge a premium for the facelifted model. Like the current Verna, the 2020 model will compete with the enduring Honda City and the coveted Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
