The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic isn’t stopping the electric onslaught in India, in fact, we’ve just witnessed the first virtual launch of an electric two-wheeler in our country. The vehicle in question is the Ampere Magnus Pro electric scooter that has been launched at Rs 73,990 (ex-showroom).
That places it in the same ballpark as the Suzuki Access 125, so what do you get for all this money? Well, it’s powered by a 1.2kW motor that can propel it to a top speed of 55kmph, but despite the instant torque that an electric motor offers, the Magnus takes a leisurely 10 seconds to accelerate to 40kmph from a dead stop.
The motor gets its juice from a 30Ah removable lithium-ion battery which claims to be good for 100km in Eco mode. In Cruise mode, range is supposedly around 75 to 80km. The charging time of 5 to 6 hours is definitely a bugbear, but Ampere says a fast charging option is also available.
The Magnus does manage to pack in quite a lot of features at this price point. You get an LED headlight, fully digital instrumentation, a boot light, USB charging, keyless operation, an anti-theft system, and a find my scooter function. Unfortunately, you don’t get the option of a front disc brake or alloy wheels.
Ampere currently has over 200 showrooms across the country, but the Magnus Pro will only be available in Bengaluru at the moment, with more cities expected to follow suit soon. A 3-year warranty is offered as standard on the battery pack, motor and controller, with an additional 2-year extended warranty available at just Rs 2,700.
