After months of rumours and speculations, the news of a tie-up between luxury sports car maker Aston Martin and AMG, Mercedes-Benz' high performance division, has finally been confirmed

The partnership between these two iconic marques involves AMG sharing its resources with Aston Martin in order for the British firm to develop powertrains for its next generation of sports cars. The joint venture will also allow Aston Martin access to electric and electronic architecture developed by AMG such as engine management systems. In exchange for sharing engine tech, AMG’s parent company, Daimler, will get to own up to five percent of non-voting shares in Aston Martin, joining existing shareholders Investment DAR and Investindustrial.

According to an official statement from Aston Martin, “The technical partnership will support Aston Martin’s launch of a new generation of models that will incorporate cutting edge technology and newly-developed bespoke V8 powertrains.” There’s no mention of V12 engines as of now, but it’s possible that in lieu of ever constricting emissions regulations, Astons of the future will be powered by eight cylinders instead of twelve.

Head of development at Aston Martin, Ian Minards, commented “Aston Martin sources cutting-edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next-generation sports cars is, clearly, good news. Working with Mercedes-AMG in this way while, of course, remaining independent and preserving the unique character and style of Aston Martin that has been the mainstay of the company throughout its 100-year history, points to a very bright future for the company as it starts its second century in business.”

Adding to Minards statements, AMG boss, Ola Källenius remarked “We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and electric/electronic components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG’s technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides.”

A letter of intent of the collaboration between the two firms has been signed as of now, while an actual agreement is expected to follow by the end of the year. Even though the deal provides for a supply agreement between AMG, Daimler and Aston Martin, the actual cars will continue to be manufactured at Aston’s facility in Gaydon, UK.
