The Formula E championship concluded in New York and after the shril echoes of the electric motors had clattered their way off the glass-walled Manhattan skyline, it was Jean-Eric Vergne from team Techeetah (China) who was crowned drivers’ champion. But it was Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler with drivers Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt who pulled off the comeback of a lifetime to lift the team title.
While the drivers’ title was tied up before the last round, the fight for the championship would quite literally go down to the line. But the real story is the comeback that the Audi team managed, which is really inspiring. Like most championships you get the idea who the title contenders are early on, and by round five of the ten-round championship the Audi team was already trailing the championship leaders by a massive 69 points. And going forward this gap widened even more to 74 points by round seven, with just three rounds to go.
But at the German round, the team’s home race, they started their comeback with a perfect weekend. Daniel and Lucas finished 1st and 2nd with Daniel leading the 45-lap race from start to finish. In fact the team even took home four more points for pole position and fastest lap.
The problems in the first half of the season meant that they couldn’t make a challenge for the drivers title. But Lucal di Grassi still managed to steal second in the last round, finishing with 144 points while Daniel Abt finished a reasonable fifth with 120 points. India’s Mahindra Racing finished 4th in the championship standings while their drivers F Rosenqvist and N Heidfeld finished 6th and 11th in the drivers standings.
