The Rs 50-60 lakh luxury SUV segment has seen a flurry of activity recently. The onslaught began in December 2017 with the launch of the Volvo XC60 and the Lexus NX, followed by the all-new Audi Q5 in January 2018 and finally the third-gen BMW X3 in April 2018. The oldest SUV of the lot, the Mercedes-Benz GLC was also given a celebratory update back in August 2017. There is a wind of change sweeping luxury manufacturers it seems; diesel powertrains seem to be losing their sheen and petrol ones are making a comeback. More than a week after BMW launched the X3 with a petrol motor, Audi has announced that the Q5 with a petrol motor will be launched on 28 June 2018.
With the announcement, it is only Volvo that will not have a petrol-powered SUV in this segment. The Lexus is exclusively powered by a petrol motor (in the 300h form with the assistance of an electrical powertrain, of course) and both the X3 (xDrive30i) and the GLC (300 Sport 4Matic) have petrol-powered variants too.
Details of the petrol engine have not been confirmed yet, but it is expected that Audi will use the same 2.0-litre petrol motor that powers the Q7 40 TFSI, albeit paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission instead of the 8-speed unit on the Q7. Equipment levels are expected to be similar to that of the Technology variant with headlining equipment including all-LED headlamps with dynamic indicators, three-zone ‘smart’ climate control, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired to a banging Bang & Olufsen sound system, panoramic sunroof and eight airbags.
Stay tuned to ZigWheels for the price and up to date details on the Audi Q5 petrol as and when it is announced.
