Skoda India has unveiled the Superb premium sedan for India at Auto Expo 2020. Changes include a facelift, new interior features, and a 2.0-litre BS6 petrol engine. The Superb is expected to be launched in May 2020. Although the current model retails from Rs 23.99 lakh to Rs 33.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), expect the facelifted BS6 Superb to be priced higher. Once launched, it will stir up old rivalries with the Toyota Camry and the upcoming Volkswagen Passat.
Under the bonnet of the Superb lies Skoda’s much-awaited 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine which makes 190PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This is a replacement for the 2.0-litre TDI engine which will not be updated to BS6. The previous-gen Superb came with a less powerful 1.8-litre TSI. A Sportline variant with 190PS and 400Nm was also showcased at the Auto Expo and could be brought in India via CBU route.
Changes to the exterior are subtle. At the front, the headlight now extends to the grille. Projector headlamps have given way to full LED matrix adaptive units. The front bumper is redesigned while the new LED fog lights sit inside an enlarged air dam.
At the rear, a chrome strip runs along the width of the tailgate to the redesigned LED taillamps. The rear bumper has also been redesigned. Dual chrome exhaust tips jut out from under the bumper. Overall, the Skoda Superb improves on its own minimalist aesthetic.
Interior changes are as hard to spot as the exterior changes, but enhance the cabin feel. The touchscreen unit is encased in a piano black panel thinly lined with a silver strip. The screen itself is larger and features buttons only on one side. A fully digital driver’s display is likely to be offered on top trims.
Although some safety assist was offered on the Superb previously, the new car is equipped with autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Adaptive headlamps and adaptive cruise control are business as usual.
Thus, the Superb is more than a facelift. It maintains its terrific design theme and yet feels as cutting-edge as other luxury cars in its class. Although the brilliant and efficient TDI motor will be missed, Skoda could bring a diesel powertrain to India in the future.
