Avera Electric Vehicles, a homegrown all-electric two-wheeler startup, has commenced bookings for its e-scooter christened the Retrosa. Launched in February this year, the Retrosa retails at Rs 1.08 lakh (ex-showroom, Andhra Pradesh). Interested customers can book the scooter for a token amount of Rs 11,200. Unfortunately, the brand is currently only dealing in the state of Andhra Pradesh via its online portal.
As for the scooter itself, it uses a lithium iron phosphate battery which offers a claimed range of 120-140km on a single charge. It can be fully charged within 3-4 hours using a conventional power socket or within 1-2 hours using Avera’s home charging station. Powering the Retrosa is a 3000W BLDC (Brushless DC Motor) motor that delivers a company claimed top speed of 90kmph. Notably, this e-scooter is locally produced, and thus qualifies for a FAME-II subsidy of Rs 25,000.
Other notable features include a full-digital instrument console, a battery monitoring system, LED lights, a side stand sensor, body coloured rear view mirrors and additional storage in the front apron. Apart from this, the Retrosa also comes with features like park assist and two riding modes (Economy & Sport+).
On the mechanical front, the Retrosa uses an aluminium body frame paired with a telescopic fork and a twin shock setup at the rear, while disc brakes on both ends provide anchorage. Moreover, the Avera Retrosa tips the scale at a mere 88kg, which should make it extremely nimble in city traffic. To put things into perspective, the TVS Scooty Pep Plus, which is currently the lightest ICE (internal combustion engine) powered scooter in India, weighs in at 97kg (kerb).
And, if we were to compare the Retrosa purely on specs, it comes pretty close to the Ather 450, which has set a benchmark in the electric scooter segment. Avera provides a 5-year warranty on the battery along with five years of insurance free of charge. The company plans on setting up 100 charging stations across India with battery swapping technology in the near future. In terms of competition, the Avera Retrosa which gets an on-road price of Rs 1.29 lakh goes up against the Okinawa i-Praise, which retails at 1.14 lakh (ex-showroom), and the Ather 450 priced at 1.23 lakh (on-road Bengaluru).
