BAJA SAE India 2014 comes to a thrilling end

The 7th edition of BAJA SAE India indeed lived up to its theme, Raise the Bar. BAJA SAE India gives colleges from across the nation a platform to showcase their talent and knowledge by building an off-road recreational four-wheel vehicle which is put through various tests through the course of the event. Each team’s goal is to create a safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive prototype without any direct involvement from professional fabricators. Teams are also free to design their own transmission as long as they adhered to the 60km/h speed cap. 

From the 327 teams that registered for the BAJA SAE India 2014, 125 qualified for the finale. The three day event commenced with a basic Static Evaluation round in which the design, cost of building and a marketing presentation was assessed. The Dynamic Evaluation round tested vehicles for acceleration, speed, hill climb and maneuverability. The most exciting of the lot was the Endurace event which saw teams battle it out for four hours on a specially crafted off-road track. The Endurance Event judged each vehicle’s ability to operate continuously at a speed over rough terrain containing obstacles in any weather conditions. 

Flagging off the Endurance round was Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. along with notable personalities from the industry. The four-hour race that wrapped up the event was indeed the most exciting of the lot, for students and spectators alike. Enthusiasm was at its peak as Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (Junkyard Warriors), Sri Govindram Siksaria Institute of Technology and Science (GS Racers) and College of Engineering (Team Nemesis) were caught in a nailbiting fight throughout the four hour race but it was Team Junkyard Warriors who took the chequered flag with top honours. 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “It’s heartening to see thousands of students coming together once again to celebrate the spirit of BAJA. Increase in participation from colleges and BAJA SAE India’s growth since inception indicates its growing popularity and national significance. This forum gives young engineering talent an opportunity to showcase their skills and acquire a real life experience posed with challenges which is critical to their success in the long term.

From the first BAJA SAE India, to its 7th edition in 2014, the event has come a long way. The fact that participation has multiplied over the years from 500 in the inaugural season to 6,500 this year, speaks volumes about its success. The whole experience of attending the event, watching the race and the excitement on the students’ faces was summarised flawlessly by Dr. Pawan Goenka himself when he said, “There’s no way to capture on camera the experience of being here.”
