The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter, which was launched in 2019, is now heading to Hyderabad and Chennai, joining Pune and Bengaluru. The Chetak will continue to be offered from select Bajaj Probiking/KTM dealerships.
What hurts Chetak’s case currently is its price tag. Just last week, Bajaj opened bookings for the latest lot of scooters but called it off within two days. However, customers were notified that the price of the scooter, or rather the ex-showroom price, had gone up. The Premium version was carrying a sticker price of Rs 1.42 lakh. While that was a shocking premium of over Rs 20,000, one must take the price with a pinch of salt.
These new price tags are without the FAME-II subsidies. Bajaj will soon get clarity on the subsidy, following which, the asking price will go down. It should be back to around Rs 1.20 lakh, the last recorded price before the removal of subsidies.
Nevertheless, Bajaj has faced several supply chain issues for the production of the Chetak, which we think it has rectified to a great extent. With the new state COVID-19 lockdown protocols in place, expect production to take a slight hit but not to the extent to which it was in 2020.
