Baja Auto will be replacing the Discover 125 with the recently launched Discover 125M in its product portfolio. The Discover 125 had made its debut in 2003, and it was the successor to the Wind 125 that was developed in collaboration with Kawasaki. Sales of the Discover 125 were high initially and it helped the bikemaker make a mark for itself in the 125cc segment but sadly it couldn’t sustain the initial demand over a period of time. Also, with passing time, consumer needs have changes and for this purpose Bajaj had launched the Discover 125ST with a complete new design in 2012. The new Discover 125M is based on the same design language with a bikini faring at front that houses the large DC supply headlight and twin pilot lamps along with a neatly sculpted windscreen. The chiselled fuel tank, Y-spoke alloys, and a restyled tail section have endowed the new bike with a more sporty and stylish appeal than the old Discover 125.
Apart from styling, the powerplant of the Discover 125 and the new Discover 125M is different. The Discover 125 was powered by a 124.6cc, air-cooled, DTS-i mill producing 11PS of power and 10.8Nm of torque. The Discover 125M also employs the same displacement mill but it has 4-valves compared to 2-valves on the older bike and its power output is 11.5PS. Another major change is that the Discover 125 had a five-speed gearbox but on the new Discover 125M power is transmitted to the rear-wheels via a four-speed transmission. Even though, the new bike is down on a cog, Bajaj claims top speed of both the bikes remain similar at 100kmph with revised gearing ratios.
The wheelbase of the new bike is 1,255mm in comparison to 1,305mm of the Discover 125. This reduction in wheelbase means that the Discover 125M will be more flickable and manoeuvrable, a useful feature especially in congested city roads. Suspension remains similar on both the bikes as they feature telescopic front forks and gas-charged Nitrox suspension at rear. Bajaj have always been renowned for pricing their products competitively and the Discover 125M is no different. The drum version of the new bike is just Rs 1,360 dearer than the old Discover 125 and given the additional features and revised styling it becomes easily justifiable. On paper, at least, the new Discover 125m seems to have all the requirements to become a worthy successor of the Discover 125 but whether it can achieve similar success of its predecessor only time will tell.
Bajaj Discover 125M pricing (ex-showroom Pune):
