Competition in the 150cc segment is going to get hotter with Bajaj Auto Ltd launching two new versions of Discover 150 on August 11.

The Discover 150S and the Discover 150F have already reached select dealerships ahead of the launch.  Both the variants will feature an all-new four-valved air-cooled 150cc engine which is expected to produce about 15PS power. Transmission is through a five-speed gearbox in the five-up shift pattern.

Technical specifications and pricing have not been revealed yet, but we have learnt that the Discover 150S will be priced at Rs 61,000 on-road Navi Mumbai for the drum variant and Rs 63,000 for the disc brake version. At this pricing, the Bajaj Discover 150S will become the cheapest 150cc offering on sale in India. This is also the first bike in its segment to feature 4-valve technology.

Based on the now-discontinued Discover 125ST, Bajaj has been able to price the 150S aggressively, borrowing body panels and the chassis from the 125ST. The instrument cluster on the Discover 150S is similar to the 125ST which is an analogue speedometer, odometer, trip meter and fuel gauge. The tachometer has been given a miss to keep costs low. Suspension consists of telescopic front forks and a Nitrox monoshock at the rear. The second variant, called the Discover 150F, will come with a semi-fairing and will be priced marginally higher than the 150S.

The Discover series from Bajaj is considered to be more commuter-oriented than the highly successful and performance oriented Pulsar range. Over the past 10 quarters, market share of the Discover series has reportedly come down to 12 per cent from 24 per cent. More recently, during the April-July quarter, TVS Motor Company has overtaken Bajaj to become the country’s third largest two wheeler company, behind market leader Hero MotoCorp and Honda. With the launch of these two 150cc variants, Bajaj is hopeful of a turnaround in sales of the Discover series.
