Benelli’s Retro-Style Scrambler Incoming

Benelli India will launch the new Leoncino 500 in India on August 5. It will be the second new motorcycle launch for 2019 from the Chinese-owned Italian brand after the Benelli TRK 502 adventure tourer earlier this year. The Benelli Leoncino 500 is a retro-styled scrambler offering and is among the prettiest motorcycle in Benelli’s portfolio. While bike’s price hasn’t been announced yet, we expect it to cost between Rs 4.40 lakh and Rs 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom). 

It will be Benelli’s second offering in the 500cc space after the TRK 502. While the TRK is a full-scale ADV-sized bike, the Leoncino is a more compact scrambler-styled offering. It’s more suited for urban riding and mild touring. Internationally, the Leoncino is offered in two variants - standard and Leoncino Trail. However, it’s likely that Benelli will only launch the standard Leoncino in India. 

On the mechanical front, the Leoncino 500 shares its 500cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled DOHC engine with the TRK 502. The motor produces 47.5PS at 8500rpm and 46Nm at 6000rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The tubular frame is suspended on chunky 50mm dia USD fork and an adjustable monoshock unit. Stopping power is provided by twin 320mm discs at the front and a 260mm disc brake at the rear. Dual channel ABS comes as standard.

Given its expected pricing, the Benelli Leoncino doesn’t have any direct rival in the Indian two-wheeler space. With its 207kg kerb weight, 815mm seat height and compact dimensions, the Leoncino will be a much easier and less intimidating motorcycle than the TRK 502. The USP of the Leoncino 500 will be its beautiful retro styling and comfy ergonomics. Watch this space for more updates.
