When it comes to extreme bike modifications, nothing makes as strong a statement as a chopper. It is a custom motorcycle that features a completely modified steering angle and lengthened forks for a stretched-out appearance. This extreme bike-mod culture began in the States in the mid-1960s and is still immensely popular 50 years down the line. Now, Big Dog Motorcycles, the world’s largest custom motorcycles manufacturer, founded in 1994, has finally made it to Indian shores with the K9 Red chopper – 111. This will be the first-ever street legal custom bike in India which is ‘One of One’ built under the aegis of Kansas Motor Works (KMW) and is one of its kind.
Big Dog Motorcycles is well known for its excellence in design function as well as luxury. These custom choppers by Big Dog are unique and no two motorcycles will be the same. The company also specializes in high-performance on-road cruisers and has delivered over 30,000 motorcycles across the globe.
Commenting in the launch, Samar J.S. Sodhi, founder, Big Motorcycles Company, said, “For decades, I was planning to get this motorcycle here in India and now finally my dream has come true. I believe that this motorcycle will attract the right rider who is looking for a unique, ‘one of one’ custom chopper which will make its presence felt on the road, and guess what this is completely street legal in India. I am extremely delighted that this ‘one of one’ custom made motorcycle is now in India. Once you take a seat on the Big Dog Motorcycle, you will know what makes for ultimate comfort. The chopper’s beastly growl will make your ears stand on end.”
Coming back to the K9 Red chopper, the bike will be powered by an 1807cc, 45-degree V-twin from S&S Superslider. The engine will be mated to a six-speed, right-side–drive gearbox. As for the engine, the S&S Cycle company is one of the most popular names in the V-twin performance business and has been providing high-performance bike parts for more than half a century. It also has a history in drag racing and Bonneville land speed racing. Moreover, the 1807cc engine is one of the biggest motors that Big Dog Motorcycles has used in the custom bike. S&S also manufactures among the highest displacement V-Twin motors – X-Wedge (1918cc and pumps out 98.85 PS of power and 149.68Nm of peak torque) – which the custom bike maker could use for its upcoming bikes in the near future.
For the chopper, buyers can also choose from a diverse collection of exotic accessories and various design options for parts such as seats, bars, additional seats, drag pipes, stator and rotor kits, and thicker tyres.
Honda had earlier launched the VT 1300CX, which was its first production chopper. Unfortunately, the mass couldn't connect with a chopper from Honda and it failed to garner respectable sales figures. Let's see whether this new offering from Big Dog Motorcycles is able to stay in the game for long. The K9 Red chopper carries a price tag of Rs 59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Just in case you're not a chopper person, for this price, you can walk away with the Indian Roadmaster or the Harley-Davidson CVO limited.
