Blasphemy Ducati Going Electric By 2021

Ducati and scooters are the two words no one associates together. However, it seems like we live in a world full of surprises, and this might just be the biggest surprise in the motorcycling community so far. And if that wasn’t much of a surprise for you, then brace up as Ducati will also be building electric two-wheelers! The Italian company who just showcased their bonkers Ducati Panigale V4 at the 2017 EICMA Show, and is renowned for their powerful motorcycles which are beautifully designed and offer a performance that is hard to express, is also succumbing to the global pressure of going electric.

Edouard Lotthe, MD of Ducati Western Europe, speaking to a French website almost confirmed that a Ducati scooter and electric motorcycles are on its way to the markets. However, he declined to comment on the timeline. But a good guess will be to not hold your breath until 2021, as that’s when Euro V kicks in. Also, the idea of a scooter shouldn’t come as a surprise given the fact that the focus in developed markets is on urban mobility and scooters have been doing great numbers. However, we are sure that a scooter with a Ducati badge will score high on the fun quotient.

Further meat into the story comes from Ducati’s parent company, Volkswagen. The German company has just announced that their entire automotive group’s lineup will be electrified by 2030. However, it still remains to be seen if the Italian bike maker will be held to the same standard as its four-wheeled siblings under the VW family.

The Italian company has so far given us some of the brawniest motorcycles in the form of their Ducati Panigale series, their WSBK race bikes, the Monster family, and so on. If there is one thing we associate Ducati with, it is their proud Italian heritage, their thundering V-twins (now V4’s) and strikingly beautiful designs. We are sure the electric two-wheelers from Ducati will set new benchmarks similar to what their gas guzzling superbikes have done in the past. But, how can one find soul and character in an efficient but almost dead electric motor? Until that day dawns, let’s enjoy the growl of the L-Twin and the rumble of the new V4!
