BMW hasn’t taken the easy out by just putting the X1 on steroids and pasting the X2 badge on it. Instead the Germans have reimagined what a crossover coupe should look like and the concept reveals a few changes in BMW’s standard design philosophy. We think, the X2 concept looks absolutely fantastic and if BMW can put the same design in production, it is bound to increase the fan following count.

The face echoes to BMW coupes, especially the 2-Series. The X2 concept has an imposing stance with BMW’s iconic kidney grille flipped upside down. BMW say this is to set the X2 apart from the rest of the BMW lineup. Not sure if this design aesthetic will make it to final production blueprint but it does make the crossover look angrier than other BMWs. The face is dominated by a massive air intake, placed just below the kidney grilles. Two triangular air intakes are sculpted on either side of the front bumper. The heavily raked windscreen blends smoothly with the dark panoramic roof.

The back end of the X2 Concept is distinctively unique to all the BMWs till date and yet it shares some design touches like the ones found on the X4 or X6. There is a leaner rear window which blends out elegantly from below the air-channelling rooftop spoiler. The nicely carved out tail-lamps accentuates the sporty coupe character. The beefed up shoulder lines of the crossover add to the whole low-slung look that BMW has focussed on.

On the sides, BMW has dressed the X2 Concept with twin-coloured 21-inch alloy wheels with pronounced wheels arches. There is protective cladding that runs all around the car, covering the wheel arches, bumpers and the lower halves of the doors.

BMW is set to put this into production in 2018. We’re not sure about how much of the concept’s design elements will end up in the final production copy but what we do know is that it will be built on the X1’s platform. That means it will be a front-wheel drive hatch with the possibility of carrying a beefier engine under the hood, as compared to the X1.
