An unfortunate victim of one of the worst consecutive natural disasters to ever hit the pacific coast, Japan is still struggling to stabilize the atomic crisis caused by an earthquake and a subsequent tsunami that hit the north eastern coast of Japan and killed close to 21,000 civilians, many of whom are still missing.

Among the many global corporations offering Japan a helping hand in the form of financial aid, rations and other services is German car maker BMW, which has also pledged a € 1 Million donation to the victims of Japan, whose homes have been engulfed in flames and shaken to the ground by the earthquake and a massive tsunami.

The company’s Board of Management expressed their shock at the tragedy unfolding in Japan. “We are deeply moved by the horrific suffering in the affected regions,” stated Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “During this difficult time, our thoughts and sympathies are with the Japanese people.”

Active in Japanese market for almost 30 years now, BMW’s National Sales Company is based in Greater Tokyo Area (the Nuclear Reactor, which was damaged by the tsunami is located roughly 240 km from Tokyo). The BMW Group had given its German employees a chance to return to Germany with their families. On the other hand, the 800 local Japanese employees are being offered support by the company.

BMW’s overall financial aid to Japan will go in equal parts to the international non-profit organization “Save the Children” and the Japanese Red Cross. Funds are earmarked for the treatment of traumatized children, emergency aid and reconstruction work.
