After making their global debut at EICMA 2019, BMW Motorrad India will finally be launching the brand new F 900 R and F 900 XR in India tomorrow. These middleweight motorcycles will be the German manufacturer’s first BS6 products. We expect the naked F 900 R to retail at around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom) while the F 900 XR could be priced at Rs 12 lakh onwards.
The F 900 R will mark BMW’s reappearance in the middleweight naked segment after a hiatus of over a decade. It looks very much like its predecessor, the F 800 R, with its muscular build and sleek tail. The oval LED headlight adds to the round look of the bike.
Following in the footsteps of the larger S 1000 XR, the F 900 XR looks rather ravishing. BMW has been highly successful in this segment of motorcycles which is basically a crossover between an adventure tourer and a sports tourer. Its long legs and upright riding ergos are exactly what makes it a good companion for touring on Indian roads.
Both motorcycles come bearing the same 895cc parallel-twin engine that puts out 105PS and 92Nm. These figures are not the highest in the segment, operating in the lower end of the power spectrum. Naked bikes like the Triumph Street Triple RS and Kawasaki Z900 are significantly more powerful while the KTM 790 Duke and the Ducati Monster 821 are on par with the F 900 R.
The F900 XR though is quite unique and doesn’t have a direct rival. Parallels can be drawn with it and the Ducati Multistrada 950 but the Italian is yet to receive its BS6 updates. More info on the two bikes in this story.
