This bit of news won’t please two-wheeler enthusiasts who have been waiting for the BMW G 310 R. The most affordable BMW Motorrad motorcycle was supposed to be launched in India during the festive season but now, that has been delayed further. Speaking to a news daily, Vikram Pawah, president of BMW Motorrad India, has revealed that the BMW G 310 R India launch has been postponed to 2018. The delay in launch, according to Pawah, is due to the scarce BMW Motorrad dealership network in India. The German brand wants to first expand its footprint in the Indian market before riding in the G 310 R. Currently, BMW has only four dealerships in India that specifically offer its higher displacement motorcycles that have been brought via the CBU route.
This means that the TVS Apache RTR 300 (TVS Akula), which is TVS’s bike based on the G 310 R, will be launched in India before the BMW offering. The G 310 R was first showcased to the Indian audience at the 2016 Auto Expo and since then has generated lot of curiosity among Indian bikers. This latest development, though, will disappoint many who fancy owning a BMW G310R. The G 310 R is the most affordable BMW motorcycle and is manufactured by TVS Motors at its production facility in Hosur.
The BMW G310R is among the most important motorcycle launches of 2016. It will be the first offering from the German bikemaker to be manufactured in India as TVS Motors and BMW Motorrad have signed an agreement. As part of the partnership, TVS Motors will manufacture the G310R and BMW will share its technology with the Hosur-based manufacturer. The BMW G310R is expected to be priced around Rs 2.5 lakh ex-showroom and will compete against the KTM 390 Duke, Kawasaki Z250 and the Benelli TNT 300i.
Talking about the engine, the BMW G310R features a 313cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder motor producing 35PS of power and 28Nm of peak torque. The powerplant has been mated to a 6-speed gearbox and the motorcycle weighs 158.5kg. The styling of the bike is based on the flagship S1000R streetbike. The wide handle bars and centre-set footpegs result in a comfortable riding posture. Overall styling isn’t very aggressive and the bike has been designed to appeal to the masses. Suspension duties are handled by USD forks at the front and a monoshock unit at the back. Braking is done via disc brakes on both the ends while ABS is standard.
