Recent trademark filings hint at three possible ‘M’ motorcycles
  • The new naming system could be analogous to how BMW’s M division names its cars.
  • ‘M’ model names have been trademarked for RR, XR and GS models.
  • 1,300cc engines could make a return to BMW Motorrad’s lineup.
  • BMW’s M division has been responsible for some of the brand’s most bonkers cars over the years. and now it looks like BMW Motorrad bikes are going to get some of the same treatment. Three trademarks recently filed by the manufacturer with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) secure the names M 1000 RR, M1000 XR and M 1300 GS.

The first two are in all probability going to be high performance versions of the 2019 S 1000 RR and possibly new S 1000 XR respectively, but it is the third name on the list that intrigues us. BMW currently doesn’t have a 1,300cc model in its GS lineup, or anywhere in its range for that matter. The R 1250 GS is the German brand’s flagship adventure tourer, making use of a recently introduced 1,254cc boxer-twin motor. Perhaps the M 1300 GS will feature a slight increase in displacement, or maybe it's just a rounding-off exercise with the name, only time will tell.

So what could these 'M' bikes have to differentiate them from their standard variants? Well, the new S 1000 RR has a plethora of M Performance parts available as add-ons, which include carbon-fibre wheels, a lighter battery, sportier seat unit, custom paint job and a chassis kit which offers adjustable rear ride height and an adjustable swingarm pivot. We can expect the M 1000 RR to be an extension of this philosophy, with more lightweight composite parts and perhaps more engine performance.

In the four-wheeled world, the M Division has also gotten its hands on BMW SUVs such as the X3 and X5 -- and even though they haven't been turned into full blown M cars, they've certainly been injected with a great deal of craziness. It will be interesting to see what the M boffins can bring to the GS range on two wheels.

Of course, at the moment all we have is a few trademark filings with the EU, and no information from BMW itself. It's entirely possible that all this could lead to a dead end and never materialise, but we have our fingers crossed hoping to see some of the M madness make its way to motorcycles.
