After what seems like a long wait, BMW Motorrad is finally here in India, officially. The German performance motorcycle maker, renowned the world over for its high capacity performance and adventure motorcycles today announced prices of its entire line-up of motorcycles for the Indian market. The 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi is when the formal announcement of the brand entering India officially had come through, and ever since, innumerable speculations were being made about the launch date and product line-up. The good news is that the German brand is bringing its entire line-up of high capacity performance motorcycles to India. The bad news is that the highly anticipated G 310 R, the 310cc, entry-level streetbike developed specifically for emerging markets like India, is not here just yet. If you've been waiting to buy the G 310 R you will probably have to wait till the end of the calendar year.
Readers might recall that motorcycles from the BMW Motorrad brand have been on sale in India for a while now, via importers in New Delhi and Mumbai, though the prices was nothing short of being exorbitant when compared to similarly specced motorcycles from other brands. With the brand here officially, prices have been corrected, and are pretty much in line with the competition. In fact, the pricing of BMW's litre-class superbike, S 1000 RR and its naked version, the S 1000 R and BMW's full-sized adventure tourer, the R 1200 GS are pretty much in the same region (or even lower in some cases) than their rivals from brands like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Triumph and Ducati to name a few.
For now, the BMW bikes are being brought in as Completely Built-up Units (CBU), imported directly from Munich, Germany, where the brand is headquartered. Interestingly, BMW has chosen to do so, despite having a manufacturing facility in Thailand. Motorrad has thus launched its S 1000 RR, R 1200 RS, R 1200 RT, K 1600 GTL, R 1200 R, S 1000 R, R NineT, R NineT Scrambler, R 1200 G S Adventure, R 1200 GS and S 1000 XR models in India. The range has been priced between Rs 14.9 lakh and Rs 28.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Two all-new dealerships have opened their doors this week for enthusiasts, one being in Mumbai and one in Pune, signifying the importance of the two cities as important markets for the brand, given the high popularity of performance motorcycles in both cities. Apart from these, BMW Motorrad will also have dealerships in Ahmedabad and Bangalore in the near future, with few more expected to follow soon. Shivapada Ray, who was previously COO at Pune-based DSK-Benelli, has been appointed as the head of BMW Motorrad in India.
Speaking about the launch, Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India, said, “BMW Motorrad is an inherent and highly emotional part of the BMW brand. Our products stand for passion, innovation and safety on two wheels. We want our existing and prospective customers to forge new paths and make BMW Motorrad a part of their aspirational lifestyle and pursue joy through riding. We intend to embark on this success story in India - with our ongoing product offensive, which we will further expand and by increasing our presence in the country with the right partners.” It is also worth noting that Vikram Pawah, who recently stepped in as top boss at BMW Group India was the MD at Harley-Davidson India before joining the German brand, and should definitely act as a catalyst for the growth of its two-wheeler business in India.
