Bavaria’s first cruiser in over a decade and a half will be arriving on our shores this week. Yes, BMW’s new R 18 cruiser is slated for a September 19 launch. The R 18 will be arriving in two variants, standard and First Edition, with prices starting around Rs 20 lakh for the base model. Around 30 units of the bike will be brought to India initially and most of them have already been accounted for, majority being the First Edition trim.

There’s no way in hell you will miss the large 1,802cc air-cooled boxer twin engine on the bike, the power unit being the largest-ever boxer twin fitted to a BMW motorcycle. It puts out an honest 91.1PS but the highlight of the motor is its torque, a groundbreaking 158Nm, of which 150Nm is delivered from as low as 2,000rpm. The power is transferred from the six-speed gearbox to the rear wheel via an exposed-shaft drive. You can check out this video for further details on the BMW R 18.
The differences between the two trims are mainly aesthetic. On the First Edition, you get white pinstripes on the tank and tail section, just like the R5 from 1936. Then the brushed metal bits from the standard model are finished in chrome. And lastly, you get special ‘First Edition’ badging on the side panels. Expect this variant to bear a small premium of around Rs 1.5-2 lakh over the standard trim.
