After receiving a “zero-star” rating in the Global NCAP Safety Crash Test, Renault has announced a safer version of the Kwid hatchback. It will come equipped with four airbags and ABS to meet the standards set by the Brazilian authorities.
During the recent NCAP test, three mules of the Kwid were tested. The first one was taken from a pre-April batch which had no airbags. The second Kwid was taken from the post-April batch which came with a reinforced structure but that also couldn’t help, and the crash impact reached even the rear fenders. The third one was the airbag-equipped Kwid and even that got a zero-star rating as high compression was recorded on the test dummy’s chest area due to the impact.
All the variants of the current Kwid miss out on essential safety features like ABS, seatbelts with pretensioners, and ISOFIX child seat anchors for the rear seat.
Renault Brazil replied to a user who commented on Renault’s official Facebook page regarding the Kwid’s NCAP test result. Renault Brazil responded, "Manufactured in Brazil and developed for Latin America, the Renault Kwid will follow the quality and safety standard of the brand and will come with ABS and 4 airbags, among other items."
Once in production, the Latin NCAP will most likely conduct a crash test on the 4 airbags-equipped Kwid which will reveal how much safer the car actually is than the current version.
