China’s most prolific recent export has of course been COVID-19 but there have also been some pretty interesting and impressive two-wheelers from the red nation in recent times. One of these is from Haojue, which is Suzuki’s local partner and distributor in China. The brochure for its upcoming DR300 has been leaked, which means that full specs are now available! If you’re wondering why we’re so excited by this obscure Chinese bike, the DR300 will be sold as the GSX-S300 in international markets, so this is definitely some big news.

The thought of a 300cc parallel-twin is quite exciting but unfortunately the DR300’s engine output figures leave a lot to be desired. At 29.23PS, it’s considerably less powerful than even single-cylinder options like the BMW G 310 R. It’s even edged out by the 286cc single-cylinder Honda CB300R, which is quite disappointing. The silver lining is that the marginally under-square cylinder dimensions should mean that bottom and mid-range grunt is quite strong, and the 27.8Nm torque figure is on-par with most rivals. What’s really impressive is Haojue’s claim that the DR300 is more fuel-efficient than the smaller GSX-250R!
The lack of power will be further exacerbated by the bike’s bulk, because at 177kg, it’s quite a bit heavier than most of the other nakeds in this displacement range. That’s the price you pay for those big bike looks and beefy underpinnings. Suspension is handled by a USD fork and 7-step preload-adjustable shock absorber, but the swingarm itself appears to be a simple stamped design.
Tyre sizes are par-for-course in this segment but the DR300 lags behind a little bit in the braking department - its 290mm front disc is a bit smaller than what we’re used to seeing in this class. It certainly pales in comparison to the KTM 390 Duke’s massive 320mm unit. On the upside, dual-channel ABS is standard.
Haojue has also thrown in quite a lot of features to try and sweeten the pot. In addition to ABS, the DR300 comes equipped with full-LED lighting, fully-digital instrumentation, USB charging, hazard lamps and an anti-theft system. Unfortunately for us, none of this will make its way to India because Suzuki has no plans to sell the GSX-S300 in India, meaning that the most affordable twin-cylinder bike in India will continue to be the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650.
