BMW has launched the X1 with its proprietary 2.0-litre petrol motor in India, heating up competition in the premium compact SUV segment. Starting at a sticker price of Rs 37.5 lakh (ex-showroom), the X1 sDrive20i is set to take on the likes of the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes Benz GLA, which are both priced around the Rs 34 lakh mark for their petrol variants.
The baby beemer SUV has been only launched in the ‘xline’ trim, unlike the diesel variant which is offered in the ‘expedition’, ‘xline’ and ‘M sport’ trims. The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol motor on the X1 churns out a punchy 192PS of power and 280Nm of peak torque from 1,350 to 4,600rpm, making it the most powerful offering in its segment on paper.
Power is sent through an all-new 7-speed ‘Steptronic’ double-clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels - the new X1 is based on the UKL2 platform which is front wheel biased, unlike the previous-gen X1. The new motor, with the all-new transmission, helps it clock upto 224kmph and a 0-100kmph sprint in just 7.6 seconds. BMW also claims a better fuel efficiency of around 15.7kmpl from the new motor.
On the inside, the X1 petrol comes as standard with BMW’s ‘ConnectedDrive’ features. These include touch-enabled navigation through a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, loaded with BMW apps, wireless Apple CarPlay, park distance control (PDC), a rearview camera, along with Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
Safety tech on the X1 includes ABS with brake assist, stability and traction control, cornering brake control and hill descent control. It also features side-impact protection and run-flat tyres with reinforced sidewalls. The sensors on board can detect collision and can also immobilise the engine upon unauthorised entry.
The new BMW X1 sDrive20i is available in three metallic paint finishes: Black Sapphire, Mediterranean Blue and Sparkling Brown.
