While Royal Enfield motorcycles have always been popular with biking enthusiasts, there are some who crave for a more powerful bike that also retains the classic lines of bikes such as the Classic or the Bullet. If you are one of them, Carberry Motorcycles has the perfect motorcycle that will fit this bill. Called the Double Barrel 1000, this motorcycle built by Paul Carberry utilises two Royal Enfield 500c UCE engines fused together to form a V-Twin layout. The Double Barrel 1000 has been priced at Rs 7.37 lakh (ex-factory). Buyers can book the bike for a token amount of Rs 1 lakh and the bikes are expected to be delivered within four to seven months.
Dubbed as the first ‘made-in-India’ V-Twin engine, the Double Barrel 1000 runs on a dual carburettor setup and churns out 53.7PS of power and 82Nm of peak torque through a brand new crankcase. The 55-degree V-Twin engine is mated to a 5-speed transmission with a seven-plate clutch system and high-strength primary chain for endurance. To reduce wear and tear, the engine also gets hydraulic lifters and an oil pump that get their separate housing. This engine is said to produce power more linearly with lesser vibrations, a common complaint with the regular 500cc engine made by Royal Enfield. These motorcycles are based on a brand new double-cradle frame as the Royal Enfield chassis is not capable of dealing with the increased load of the new engine and lacked space to accommodate the new motor. Hence, the V-Twin motor isn’t a bolt-on unit for the standard Royal Enfield bikes.
The Double Barrel 1000 will be equipped with ABS and disc brakes at both ends. A two-in-one exhaust system will also be standard and promises to offer better performance. While the carburetted version of the bike is in the process of homologation, Carberry Motorcycles is also developing a fuel-injected version that will comply with BS-IV emission norms.
The Double Barrel 1000 has made its way to our market way ahead of Royal Enfield motorcycles with the brand new parallel-twin engine. We expect the latter to offer not more than 750cc of displacement and produce around 45PS of power and 60Nm of torque.
About Carberry Motorcycles:
Years ago, Paul Carberry made the Carberry Enfield with a 1000cc engine that was created by fusing two Royal Enfield 500cc engines in a V-Twin format. When talks with Royal Enfield to produce the bikes at their Chennai factory failed, Carberry moved its operations from Australia to our shores by tying up with businessman Jaspreet Singh Bhatia from Bhilai, Chattisgarh. With the first few motorcycles up and running, Carberry Motorcycles will soon be shifting operation to Pune.
Carberry Motorcycles says they want their new brand of motorcycles to be reliable by using quality parts. However, at the current price point of the Double Barrel 1000, it remains to be seen if there are enough takers for the manufacturer to open up full-fledged operations in the country.
