This is the first of an entire entry-level saloon barrage that is headed India’s way in 2013. With badge sharing now taking a breather, it is platform sharing that will now see mass market car manufacturers reload their arsenal for deeper penetration.
After drawing first blood with the launch of its very spacious Sail UVA hatch in November last year, Chevrolet has now flagged off the ‘hatchback with boot’ trend in the new year with the launch of its Sail sedan at a starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The width and the wheelbase are exactly the same as the Sail UVA, and as a result so is the space. Certain advantageous features on the Sail sedan like its spacious interiors, oodles of boot space (370 litres), comfortable ride quality and efficient power plants in both petrol and diesel guise will make it a strong consideration over most in the entry-level mid-size sedan segment (Read : Chevrolet Sail Sedan First Drive).
Powering the new Sail sedan just like we saw with on its smaller UVA cousin is a 1.2-litre petrol unit developing 86 PS @ 6000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 4400 rpm, while the diesel model is powered by the extensively shared Fiat 1.3 litre Multijet engine, which develops 78 PS @4000 rpm and 205 Nm @ 1750 rpm with a claimed fuel efficiency of 22.1 kmpl.
Even the swanky exterior features are a carry on from the UVA like the dual-port grille and the ‘Hawk Wing’ headlamps. But like we experienced in the hatch version, the lacklustre interior fit and finish with infotainment features that leave you asking for more would perhaps once again repel a large number of potential buyers.
Starting from a price of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex showroom Delhi) for the petrol variant all the way up to Rs 7.51 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the top end diesel variant, the Sail sedan will give you a total of eight variants to pick from. It will be available to Indian buyers in seven exterior colours Velvet Red, Switchblade Silver, Summit White, Caviar Black, Linen Beige, Sandrift Grey and Misty Lake.
Competitively priced and backed by a household name the Chevrolet Sail sedan will go up against long runners in the competition like the venerable Swift DZire, the Toyota Etios, Ford Classic, Mahindra Verito and even the Tata Indigo eCS.
