In 2011, we spotted the next-generation Chevrolet U-VA that will be called the Sail UVA, testing in India. The car was later unveiled at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo in January. And now, after 10 months of waiting, the Sail UVA is finally ready to hit showrooms.
The Sail U-VA comes with a 1.2-litre engine tuned to produce 86PS. The Sail then will go head on against the likes of the bestselling Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 and Fiat Grande Punto. The Sail UVA will also come in diesel trim, powered by the 1.3-litre Smartech diesel engine, developed jointly by GM and Fiat. The mill does duty in most Indian hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift, Ritz, Tata Indica Vista and the Punto. However in the Sail UVA, it is tuned to produce 78PS of power and an impressive 205Nm of torque. However, expect the diesel Sail to be the key volume driver for Chevrolet considering the high interest in diesel cars in the wake of constantly rising petrol prices. In terms of design, the Sail UVA doesn't break any new grounds though it does look a lot fresher than the Aveo U-VA. The design cues on both the cars remains quite similar with some clean straight lines. Also, like the Aveo U-VA, the new Sail will offer oodles of cabin space. We expect the Sail UVA prices to start at around Rs 4.5 lakh going up to Rs 5.5 lakh for the diesel models which should give the Maruti Swift a tough fight. Sail U-VA owners will also have one major benefit over the Maruti --GM's three-year maintenance package, which should help keep overall cost of ownership down.
