In the latest edition of Zig’s performance comparison, we lineup two C3 hatchbacks. But they are very different from each other as one is the ICE version and the other is the pure electric model. And in this test, we have just one single objective: which one crosses the line first when put pedal to the metal. Let’s find out.
But before that…

On paper, the eC3 is down on power when compared to the ICE model. However, it makes up for better torque and the eC3 being an EV, is delivered instantly. That said, the eC3 has one factor that has to be considered: its weight. Thanks to its battery pack and all the electrical equipment, its gross weight is a whopping 329kg heavier than the ICE model.
Can it win in the acceleration test?
It’s ICE vs EV, manual vs automatic. Which one manages to cross the line first? Let’s find out.
It’s light out and away we go and the eC3 manages to jump off the line better than the ICE model. In fact, up to 60kmph, the EV is quicker than the ICE model. Post that though, the eC3 starts to taper power to conserve the battery and the C3 starts to catch up, and later take the lead. Finally, managing to beat the electric hatch by two seconds. Also, the top speed of the eC3 is limited to just 102kmph.

However, the eC3 manages to fight back in the roll-on acceleration test. Yes, we have different parameters in roll-on acceleration for manual and automatic cars, but the EV’s better and instantaneous torque output means it’s quicker.

If your usage is primarily inside the city, then the eC3 makes a lot of sense as its feel much quicker and livelier to drive in town. Also, it being an automatic does make life a whole lot easier especially in traffic. However, if you plan on using this hatch on the open roads more often, then the C3 would be our pick as it’s more versatile to drive.

However, do note that if you intend to pick up the eC3, it commands a massive premium over the standard 82PS model that we have used to compare in this test. And yes running and expenses would also matter to recuperate that additional cost. That’s what we will be comparing about both these cars soon, including their driving range. So stay tuned.
