Citroen plans to have an electrified version of all its existing models by 2025
  • The electric C4 Cactus will be the fourth EV in Citroen’s lineup.
  • Both the combustion and electric versions will sit on a stretched Compact Modular Platform.
  • Citroen said that the C5 sedan will be resurrected sometime after the C4 replacement is launched.
  • The C5 Aircross SUV plug-in hybrid will be launched globally next year.

Earlier this month, Citroen announced its plans to have electrified versions for its entire lineup, starting with the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid SUV. You can read our news story about it here. According to a new report, the upcoming C4 Cactus will be the second model to get the treatment with an all-electric variant. But is there a chance we could see the Europe-only crossover on Indian roads in the future?

Linda Jackson, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Citroen, reiterated that every new model will either have a fully electric or a plug-in hybrid version starting next year. The CMP is a modular compact car platform made by PSA in conjunction with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng. It can accommodate petrol, diesel, hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. The recent Vauxhall Corsa e, Pugeot 208 and Citroen DS3 Crossback are all underpinned by the CMP.

Jackson also said that the C5 sedan will see the light of day again. No timelines were disclosed, though she said that the sedan will be based on the CXperience concept unveiled in 2016. That’s exciting news for two reasons: the brand currently has no sedans in its lineup, and the CXperience concept looks brilliant. Unlike most other concepts, it was focused on the comfort of its passengers. Citroen Advanced Comfort cocoons the passengers of the low-slung sedan. The plug-in hybrid was conceived to have a 152-203PS petrol engine, a 170PS electric motor, and an all-electric range of 60km.

The C5 Aircross got a plug-in hybrid version just this month. Citroen’s technology flagship will go on sale in Europe early next year. It is unlikely to make its way to India due to the high cost of imported hybrid vehicles. Even in France, the starting price of the SUV is twice of what we expect the combustion C5 Aircross to cost.

The French carmaker will unveil its first car for India in late 2020. The C5 Aircross SUV is confirmed for launch by the end of 2020, but Citroen is tight-lipped about future launches. The carmaker plans to launch one new car every year until 2023. It will make sense for the brand to introduce a less expensive model for 2021 to get a wider audience in the country.
