The CARE technology is capable of changing the tyre pressure based on its surroundings and conditions
  • CARE technology is closely aligned with two criterias - autonomous driving and electric mobility
  • The CARE technology has multiple sensors built into the tyre that monitor key parameters.
  • A centrifugal pump built into the wheel helps regulate the ideal tyre pressure.

While there were a slew of new and futuristic cars at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, it must be noted that they are only as good as their tyres. Continental recently previewed its new CARE tyre technology at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. These CARE, or Connected, Autonomous, Reliable, Electrified, tyres aren’t your ordinary set of tyres.

Continental says that the CARE technology is closely aligned with two main criterias in mind - autonomous driving and electric mobility. Called the ContiSense, multiple sensors are built into the tyre that actively monitor the four main parameters of the tyre - tread depth, possible tyre damage, tyre pressure and tyre temperature. The stats of these parameters can be seen live on Continental’s web-based ContiConnect Live application. But wait, the story doesn’t end there.

Hot exterior temperatures result in expansion of air inside your tyre. And if it goes overboard, it might eventually lead to a tyre burst. To counter that, the CARE technology has centrifugal pumps that are built into the wheel. Called PressureProof technology, the centrifugal forces that act upon the wheel inflate/deflate the tyre. For example, during acceleration, the centrifugal forces within the wheel act on the pump to generate compressed air that helps it maintain the ideal pressure. And if it has been excessively filled, the excess air is stored in an in-built tank for later use. The pumps also act upon the road surfaces and its surroundings and constantly adjust the tyre pressure based on the conditions.

So with the new CARE technology, all information and equipment is available on board which means, no visits to the local tyre shop. That’s not all as Continental is set to introduce a SilentWheel concept soon. The German tyre maker said that it will be a modified rim and claims that it will have very less vibrations and offer superior ride quality.
