Our hopes are sky high as usual
  • A report suggests that Maruti is planning to introduce the highly anticipated Jimny.
  • The report also reveals that Maruti Suzuki is betting on SUVs for the future.
  • Grand Vitara and a 7-seater SUV with Toyota are also likely to be in the pipeline.

The Suzuki Jimny is arguably one of the most hyped SUVs of recent times. Why? Well, it’s a lovable mini-SUV, which treads a fine line between ruggedness and charm. We were repeatedly let down by Maruti Suzuki as it announced that the Jimny won’t make it to India. But there’s a ray of hope hidden in a report, which reveals Maruti’s SUV plans for India.

The report states that Maruti Suzuki plans to bring the Jimny and is also likely to revive the Grand Vitara name to rival the Kia Seltos. The carmaker could also be working on a 7-seater SUV in partnership with Toyota. The Grand Vitara will help Maruti plug the gap above the Vitara Brezza while the Jimny will slot in below the Brezza. On an interesting note, the report also claims that the company (Maruti Suzuki) has started preparations to bring the vehicle (Jimny) to India. All the information presented here is claimed to come from a Maruti Suzuki spokesperson.

One thing we know for sure is that we really want the Jimny in India, preferably in the actual 3-door version as a perfect replacement for the Gypsy. The current Jimny Sierra uses a K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine rated at 102PS and 130Nm of torque. This engine is paired up with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The Jimny is also available in a Kei version, which uses a 663cc three-cylinder turbo petrol in Japan. Some notable equipment on offer includes part-time 4WD with a low-range transfer gear, 3-link rigid axle suspension, brake LSD and ESP.

Meanwhile, Mahindra is all set to drive in the new Thar that honestly looks upmarket from what we’ve seen so far. It is no secret that the Jimny has a cult fan following all over the country. This combined with the huge void left by the venerable Gypsy has left us with no other choice than to root for this new development in the hopes it’ll turn out to be true.
