The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has hit India pretty hard. With cases on the rise, this has led to the country’s medical infrastructure being stretched beyond its capacity for medical and oxygen equipment. To help address this, Maruti Suzuki will temporarily halt production at its factories in Haryana and Gujarat to aid in oxygen supply for the needy.
The logic behind this is that the carmaker uses some oxygen in production of its cars. So by shutting down production, the carmaker will divert the oxygen they have into aiding medical needs in the fight against this pandemic. Its yearly maintenance shutdown of its factories was scheduled in June 2021. But the pandemic situation has led to the carmaker preponing it to the period of May 1 to May 9 2021.
This isn’t Maruti Suzuki’s first rodeo in joining the fight against COVID-19, as back in 2020, Maruti Suzuki helped its joint venture partner Krishna Maruti donate 2 lakh of the 1 million promised three-ply face masks to the Gurugram administration. It also provided food and water supply around its manufacturing facilities in Haryana.
