The Datsun GO and GO+ received a lot of flack when both the cars received zero rating in a crash test conducted a few months back. For this purpose the Japanese carmaker has decided to make its products safer and will introduce airbags as an optional extra. The Datsun GO hatchback and Datsun GO+ MPV with airbags will be launched in August. The airbag-equipped variants will be priced at Rs 15,000 premium over the standard offerings.
Production of the Datsun GO and Datsun GO+ airbag models has already started in the Chennai plant. The airbag equipped models will be christened Datsun GO T (O) and the GO+ T (O). Apart from the addition of optional airbags no changes will be made on the car on the mechanical as well as physical front. Powering both the cars is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder motor producing 68PS of peak power and it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Datsun claims a mileage figure of 20.6kmpl for the GO hatchback and GO+ MPV.
The Datsun GO was banned in Europe after the crash test results were released. Despite this fact, the hatchback and its MPV sibling were allowed to be on sale in India. But with the addition of airbags safety of the Datsun offerings should be better. Prices for the Datsun GO & GO+ start at Rs 3.23 lakh and Rs 3.79 lakh respectively.
