Datsun will launch the Go+ on January 15 in India creating a new segment of entry level compact MPVs. The Go+ as the name suggests give you a little extra over the Go hatchback. It technically doesn’t compete with any MPV directly in terms of price, performance, space or equipment. Expect prices of the Go+ to start from Rs 3.6 lakh.

The Go+ is smartly styled and looks more expensive than it actually is in pictures. But built with a strict price point in mind, Datsun have kept features and equipment to a minimum. On the exterior, small 13 inch wheels and no alloy wheel option being the most evident. The interior is fairly basic but neatly designed. It’s same as the Go so you get a dual tone dashboard and there’s good space in the front and middle row. The added third row though owing the MPV’s compact dimensions isn’t of much use except for small children. You can however fold the row flat to open up a large boot.

The Go+ will be a petrol only MPV as it sports the same 1.2-litre mill from the Go but remapped to provide a more linear torque curve. The engine develops 69PS of power and 105Nm of torque. While it may not seem like a lot for an MPV, it’s a fairly light car, lighter than most hatchbacks in the country and that makes its fairly peppy. The engine is mated to a five speed manual gearbox.

The Datsun is an entry level MPV agreed but safety features like ABS and Airbags aren’t offered even as optional equipment. There is a growing awareness of safety in India, especially after the recent NCAP tests. Datsun should seriously consider getting these features on the options list.
