The Datsun Go+ has been launched in India at Rs 3.79 lakh. The Go+ is based on the Go hatchback but is longer to accommodate seven seats. The Datsun Go+ also kickstarts an all new segment of sub 4-meter compact MPV. That said, Datsun isn’t calling the Go+ a compact MPV but a compact family wagon given the last row of seating is anything but roomy.
The Datsun Go+ is available in 4 variants i.e. D, D+, A and T. The Go+ comes with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine that offers 68PS of peak power and 104Nm of peak torque. First time users will find the engine easy to use too with its smooth power delivery and peppy initial acceleration.
The Datsun Go+ features the same interior as you get on the Go. Practicality and no frills is the direction the Japanese automaker has taken for the Go+ with a very basic but well styled grey and black dashboard. The front and middle seat rows are quite comfortable and offer great head room and shoulder room. Although the Go+ officially has seven seats, the last row is near impossible to use by an adult and is best suited to children. That said, folding the seats flat does result in a lot of luggage space.
As we mentioned earlier, Datsun has taken the safer route by marketing the Go+ as a compact family wagon and not a compact MPV. The MPV monicker in India is more synonymous with the likes of larger rugged vehicles like the Xylo and the Innova and calling the Go+ an MPV could have resulted in the Indian audiences not accepting the car. Although the station-wagon or wagon body style, essentially a longer hatchback has never really been popular in India in the past, we think the Indian automotive scene could finally be ready for the versatility that the wagon tends to offer at a cost that is usually much cheaper than the likes of a compact SUV that pretty much offers the same in terms of space and people carrying capacity.
The Datsun Go+ is targeted at Hyundai i10 and Maruti Wagon R buyers and promises added practicality.
