Datsun redi-GO: Variants Explained

Datsun has finally launched its smallest car, the redi-GO. Sitting in the entry-level hatchback category, the car will take on the likes of the Maruti Alto 800, Hyundai Eon 800 and its own cousin, the Renault Kwid. The redi-GO is priced very competitively and is already undercutting its mentioned rivals. Its base variant is priced at Rs 2.39 lakh while the top-end variant is priced at a decent sum of Rs 3.34 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, New Delhi). This price bracket holds all the five variants and we list the features available with them along with their pros and cons.

The redi-GO D (Rs 2.39 lakh)

The base variant's biggest plus point is its low price, of course, as it misses on features like the power steering and air conditioning unit. Then it is also less appealing on the aesthetic front because of the black front and rear bumpers and no wheel caps on the black steel wheels. On the inside, it misses out on features like foldable rear seats, music system, and power socket. Its notable features are:

- Single front windscreen wiper

- Trip meter with average and instantaneous fuel economy display along with gear shift indicator

- Child lock on rear doors (of course)

- Driver side wing mirror

- Driver side sun visor

- Three-point seatbelts for four passengers, lap belt for rear-central passenger

The redi-Go A (Rs 2.83 lakh)

This variant is priced around Rs 44,000 more than  the base variant and avails the biggest benefit from the addition of the air conditioning unit over the ‘D’, however, power steering is still missing. It also gets the foldable rear seat, a power socket, and a digital tachometer, which were unavailable on the base variant. Other feature, in addition to the features on the D version, include:

- Body coloured bumpers

- Passenger side wing mirror

- Passenger side sun visor

- Air conditioning unit

- Power socket on dashboard

- Foldable rear seats

- Digital tachometer

The redi-GO T (Rs 3.09 lakh)

As compared to the ‘A’ variant, the ‘T’ variant will ask for Rs 28,000 more. For this additional money one will get power steering (thankfully, this time) as the most important upgrade. On the aesthetic front, it gets full wheel covers and body coloured door handles. On the inside, the features are same as the ‘A’ trim and, similar to that, the music system is not available here also.

The redi-GO T(O) (Rs 3.19 lakh)

This trim  is the second-top trim and is pricier by Rs 10,000 than the ‘T’ variant’s price. This added amount translates to front power windows along with an audio system with CD, USB, AUX-in connectivity. The music system also supports CD and features a radio. To add to the convenience of the front row occupants, the redi-GO also get front power windows, however, rear power windows are absent in all the trims just like the Renault Kwid.

The redi-GO S (Rs 3.34 lakh)

The top end 'S’ trim demands Rs 25,000 more than the ‘T(O)’ variant and for this added money you get a driver side airbag to add to the safety along with DRLs to add to the exterior appeal.

Apart from these features, Nissan is also offering a few accessory options so that one can personalise the redi-GO. A few to name are, front and rear skid plates for the bumpers, rear spoiler, roof rails, reverse parking system, mood lighting, etc.

Speaking of the power source, the redi-Go is available with a 799cc engine, which produces 54PS of power and is mated to a 5-speed manual. The motor has a segment-best mileage of 25.17kmpl, thanks to the light CMF-A platform that the redi-Go is based on.
