Datsun, Nissan-Renault's rebranded budget brand, has achieved a milestone today. The company has rolled out its 100,000th (1 lakh) car from its Indian manufacturing facility since production began in February 2014. The milestone car, a redi-GO 1.0-litre, was flagged off the assembly line by Jerome Saigot, MD, Nissan Motor India and Colin MacDonald, CEO and MD, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited.
Datsun currently sells the redi-GO hatchback, Go hatchback and the Go+ compact-MPV in India. The majority of cars it produces in India are exported, to countries like South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The brand has not had a big impact in the Indian market in terms of absolute numbers. However, it is growing at a much faster pace than its competition in the country.
The 1 lakh car - redi-GO 1.0L is also the latest product from Datsun’s stable. It is powered by the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder 68PS/91Nm petrol engine as the popular Renault Kwid. Datsun/Nissan’s ambition to achieve 5 per cent market share in India could be helped by the company’s next big launch, the Go Cross.
The production version of the Go Cross is expected to be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, in February and could finally bring in the big sales numbers which Datsun/Nissan have been hoping for.
