Come July 15, 2013, and India will witness the rebirth of the iconic Datsun brand at Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon, Haryana. Carlos Ghosn, global CEO of the Renault-Nissan alliance, is expected to take the wraps off the new Datsun, which is a hatchback based on the previous generation Nissan Micra.

The Datsun hatchback will boast a fresh styling compared to the old Micra and will be smaller in terms of exterior dimensions but roomier inside. It will be a completely stripped out version and is expected to be priced under Rs 4 lakh. This means it will compete directly with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. It will be powered by the Micra’s 1.2 litre petrol engine with no diesel engine is on the cards as of now. This means that the Datsun small car will be more powerful than all its rivals while also matching the fuel efficiency of its smaller engined rivals. Related: Datsun is ready to roll in India

A larger model with a seven-seater option is also being planned for the Datsun range of cars in India. The seven-seater model is expected to compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which means that it will have a diesel engine option, possibly the 1.5 dCi engine that does duty in the Nissan Micra, Sunny and Evalia.

Reports state that the Datsun brand is looking to sell 1.50 lakh to 2 lakh cars in India every year and that the company plans to launch all three models at the 2014 Auto Expo.
