The new Monster 797 will be the smallest capacity Monster motorcycle offered by Ducati globally. The design of the new motorcycle is in line with the Monster 795 and 796 and looks very similar. Positioned as an entry level Monster, the bike is targeted at customers looking to buy a big bike for the first time.
The motorcycle can be tagged as an entry-level performance motorcycle from Ducati and is the most accessible bike that carries the Ducati tag. Scrambler surely might be a bike worth taking a note of, but then its retro-modern appeal is targeted for a different audience altogether. Our fellow journalist, Jagdev, went for the Ducati Riding Experience (DRE) organised by Ducati where they wanted new riders to ride the Monster 797. You can read more about his DRE experience here. In the meanwhile, we list five features of the new Monster 797 that make it a sweet deal.
Engine –
The Monster 797 is powered with a 803cc L-twin air-cooled motor that it shares with the Scrambler. It produces 74.7PS @8250rpm and a peak torque of 68.9Nm @ 5750rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox, which is 0.9Nm more than the Scrambler. It also gets electronic fuel-injection system. The Monster 821, on the other hand, comes with a 821cc engine that makes 112PS.The Monster 797 gets an APTC multidisc wet clutch with control cable which according to Ducati provides a light clutch lever action.
Electronics –
The Monster 797 gets a digital speedometer console with an LCD screen which displays total mileage, engine oil temperature, average speed, journey time and clock along with the usual speed, rpm and two trip meters. Ducati has also equipped the bike with an under-seat USB charging port. The company will also provide an optional Ducati Multimedia System via which riders can connect their phones to the bike by Bluetooth. We expected the bike to get traction control as Ducati targets novice riders to buy it but it sorely misses on it.
Cycle Parts -
The Monster 797 is constructed around a tubular steel trellis frame. Suspension duties are handled by beefy 43mm Kayaba USD forks with 130mm travel at the front and a Sachs monoshock unit that is pre-load and rebound adjustable with 150mm travel at the rear. The bike gets twin 320mm semi-floating discs with radially-mounted Brembo Monobloc 4-piston caliper at the front and a 245mm disc with single-piston caliper at the rear.
Its 10-spoke front wheel is shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso II 120/70 R17 tyre and the 10-spoke rear wheel is wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso II 180/55 R17 tyre.
Features –
The Monster 797 gets LED position lights with a single halogen bulb for high and low beam functions for the headlight along with LED taillamp. It gets Bosch twin-channel ABS as standard. The saddle height of 805mm and a weight of 175 kg of the 797 is good for riders with average built. The fuel tank capacity is 16.5 litres. Since it’s a Ducati, we did expect it to have ride-by-wire and riding modes, but these features are only offered Monster 821 onwards. It points towards Ducati’s motive to keep it to bare basics and keep costs in check.
Price and Rivals –
Though Ducati has not announced the price for the motorcycle yet, we expect it to cost around Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Once on sale, it will take on the likes of the Kawasaki Z650, Harley-Davidson Iron 883 and the Triumph Bonneville T100. The Z650 surely is a smaller motorcycle with a more affordable price tag, but it comes very close to the 797 in terms of engine nature and accessibility. The Iron 883 and Bonneville T100 might seem slightly out of place against the Monster’s nature and purpose, but the main reason they are mentioned here is because they fall under the same price bracket.
