We have heard rumours over the past two years that Ducati is preparing an exotic V4 superbike for road use as well as production-based racing championships. Finally, the company CEO, Claudio Domenicali, has confirmed a V4 superbike at the launch of its 2017 MotoGP team. Moreover, the model’s development has been said to come directly from the Italian marque’s work in MotoGP. While the displacement of the upcoming V4-powered road-going bike hasn't been announced yet, it can be expected to share the 1000cc, 90° V4 motor with the Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP race bike.

Confirming the fact, Domenicali said, “The engine development we have made in MotoGP is exceptional. We have an engine which is very reliable, very light, compact and has a lot of interesting technology. We are seriously thinking of introducing it to regular customers because it is a masterpiece of engineering.”

We can say that the new V4 superbike could replace the Panigale R in Ducati’s lineup, and become the new racing platform of the company for production-based racing championships. Domenicali also confirmed that the upcoming V4 superbike will be going in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) as well, further confirming the engine displacement as per the rules of the championship.

According to the CEO, the road-going V4 platform would also get some inputs in aerodynamics from Ducati's MotoGP race bikes. However, it will be prepared as per the homologation requirements set by the FIM. “Of course, translated into a something that can be sold for a reasonable, if not premium price. So, it will not be a kind of exotic bike like the Desmosedici, but a more regular high-end sport bike,” Domenicali added.

We can say that the new Ducati V4 superbike could replace the Panigale R in the future but nothing can be expected soon. Though the bike has been speculated to be unveiled at the 2017 EICMA show this year, we believe that it will not be making its entry into the market or racing until 2019. Moreover, the bike might be produced in limited quantities and is expected to get an exclusive price tag to match.
