Eicher Polaris deserve credit for making something as versatile as the Multix and for coming up with the term 'personal utility vehicle - PUV' before Mahindra.
For those who don't know much about Multix, here's a brief rundown:
- Designed with nothing but practicality in mind
- Can be registered as a personal vehicle (compulsory personal vehicle registration only in Delhi)
- Developed jointly by Eicher (makes tractors and trucks) and Polaris (makes off-road buggies)
- Can be used as a generator with the alternator accessory
- Employs independent front and rear suspension instead of leaf spring; clearly, comfort is the priority, not load lugging
- Runs on a 652cc single-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine with a 4-speed transmission
- Makes 13PS of power but churns out a healthy 37Nm of torque at very low revs
- Frugal motor and returns 27kmpl
- Simple and robust mechanicals help it last longer with minimal maintenance
- Flexituff body shell is non-metallic and scratch and dent resistant
After clearing the red tape, the Multix has finally gone on sale in Delhi with a price tag of Rs 3.19 lakh for the AX+ variant and Rs 3.49 lakh for the MX trim (ex-showroom Delhi). The AX+ misses out on the four doors for a close-to-the-nature experience.
The loading bed alone offers a storage space of 418 litres, which can be expanded to 840 litres with a rear cover for a completely enclosed body. Put the seats down, and you'll earn a total space of 1918 litres. That's enough to move house.
The build quality is better than most entry-level commercial vehicles but not at par with passenger cars. Being the only one of its kind allows the Multix to be two vehicles at once without trying to outdo either.
One kind of buyers would be farmers and business people who could move their products without having to invest in a commercial vehicle for work and a car for personal use. With the alternator accessory, it can generate 3kW of power.
Others can use it for recreational purposes. There's enough space for four and a loading bay for packing all the essentials you’d need for a picnic. The low price tag, heavy-duty construction and independent suspension means you could throw it around the jungle trail without worrying about a thing.
Air conditioning is not an option, so I'd choose the door-less AX+ because I want to smell the morning dew and not my sweat.
