The Goa government has exempted electric vehicles from road tax. The step has been taken to curb the increasing air pollution in the state by promoting EV adoption. Last year, less than a dozen EVs were registered in the state.
The state government’s notification regarding the same read: “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 11 of Goa, Daman and Diu Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1974 (Act 8 of 1974), the government of Goa exempts electric operated vehicles (EOVs) from the payment of tax. The notification shall come into force from the date of its publication in the official gazette.”
Since the Indian government announced the 2030 deadline for selling EVs in India, various state governments have taken steps to promote EV sales in the country. In May 2017, the Maharashtra government waived off Road Tax, Value Added Tax and registration fees on EVs registered in the state. Related:Nagpur Gets Electric Taxis - MH Waives Off Tax On EVs!
In September 2017, the Karnataka government issued its EV policy (Karnataka Electric Vehicles & Electric Storage Policy 2017). It was aimed at projecting Bengaluru as the EV capital of India by developing EV manufacturing zones and clusters, providing subsidies for charging infrastructure in all public and private properties, exemption from payment of taxes on EVs, and providing various other benefits to all manufacturers, support system providers and buyers.
