The upcoming motorcycle is likely to be manufactured at Piaggio’s Baramati plant
  • The upcoming motorcycle is likely to have premium underpinnings.
  • Aprilia is planning to sell it in international markets as well.
  • Will rival KTM, Suzuki and Honda in this segment.
  • We all have been waiting for Aprilia to enter the commercial motorcycle segment for a while now. There were rumours that Aprilia might bring a fully faired bike to our shores soon. Interestingly, there were some spy shots to support this rumour as well. Now though, in an exclusive interview with ZigWheels.com, Diego Graffi, CEO and MD, Piaggio India, has confirmed that the production of the motorcycle has been delayed.

The market is now slowly shifting from 150cc to 250cc-300cc and one of the reasons for this delay could be due to the complications in making a new vehicle platform specifically for that engine capacity. And it won’t be just an ‘India-specific’ model, mind you. Once the motorcycle hits the production line, the brand is planning to make this motorcycle a global product. It will be especially targeted towards the Indian as well as the South East Asian masses, where affordability is the key factor.

Aprilia is likely to manufacture the upcoming motorcycle in India, which will help the bike maker keep costs in check. However, the upcoming motorcycle(s) will definitely be on the premium end of the spectrum, so expect Aprilia to equip the motorcycle with some segment-first features as well as top-notch components.

Now, the question is - when will we get to see the motorcycle in the flesh? Well, Graffi hasn’t mentioned any specific timeline, but we believe the brand might showcase at least a prototype at the upcoming EICMA. When Aprilia finally launches the motorcycle here, in India, it will be quite an uphill task for the manufacturer with rivals like KTM, Honda and Suzuki. Moreover, Bajaj and Triumph have also teamed up to make a 200cc motorcycle, which will be priced under Rs 2 lakh! What a time to be a motorcycle enthusiast!
