While it is no secret that Norton Motorcycles will soon launch the Norton Commando and the Norton Dominator range of motorcycles in the coming months in India, the pricing of these motorcycles, however, had left many of us speculating. Now, however, our sources have confirmed that Norton will launch the Commando series at a starting price of Rs 23 lakh. The pricing of the Norton Dominator, on the other hand, hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it should be around Rs 30 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
The steep pricing can be attributed to the fact that the initial few bikes will be brought here via the CBU route, on a pre-order basis and will have a 90 day waiting period. However, Norton has partnered up with Kinetic to start local assembly at its facility in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, which should help in bringing the prices down in the future.
Coming to the bikes itself, the Norton Commando is offered in two different variants - Sports and Cafe Racer. As the name suggests, the Cafe Racer sports clip-on handlebars and a small flyscreen, giving it a retro look. The Norton Commando 961 Sports, on the other hand, sports a neo-classic design. The Norton Dominator, along with goodies seen on the Commando, features carbon-fibre parts as well.
Both the motorcycles are powered by the same 961cc, air-cooled, parallel-twin engine, which makes 80PS of power at 6500rpm and 90Nm of torque at 5200rpm, mated to a 5-speed gearbox.
The Norton Commando and Dominator will face competition from Triumph’s modern classic lineup, such as the Triumph Bonneville T120 and the Thruxton 1200, which considerably undercuts Norton’s range, by almost Rs 13 lakh! Triumph also, well… triumphs in terms of established sales and service networks as well. Something which Norton will initially struggle to match up to. However, the exclusivity and the premium quotient that Norton offers might as well be worth the extra dough for some enthusiasts.
Norton will exclusively sell its motorcycle through Kinetic-owned Moto Royale dealerships. The chain of dealerships also offers sales and service for MV Agusta motorcycles and will soon add the SWM brand under its umbrella.
