We think it was Einstein who once said you shouldn’t judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree or something to that effect. In this case, meaning that almost every electric two-wheeler today is special in its own right, each offering a ray of hope for the future of our green planet.
And even then, the ones we have here on this list are extraordinary, to say the least. Each is an apex predator in one right or the other, offering superlative bragging rights either in terms of performance or efficiency or just plain ridiculous price tags. They represent the very best of what our electrified future of mobility has to offer, and what better day to celebrate them than today, World EV day.
Fastest EV- Lightning LS-218
Lightning Motorcycles is a USA-based EV manufacturer that recently made headlines with its LS-218. It currently claims to clock a top speed of 350kmph. That’s more than what its modern-day petrol-powered litre-class foes offer.
It’s powered by a 150kW+ motor and gets a 20kWh battery pack. Apart from the massive top speed, the Lightning LS-218’s components too are quite impressive. You get Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspension at both ends. With a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged in just 30 minutes.
Quickest Acceleration- Energica Ego+ RS
Energica is the first Italian supersport electric motorcycle manufacturer. The brand is well known for its contribution to MotoGP but we’ll come to that later in this piece. Energica’s road legal EV, the Ego+ RS is the quickest accelerating bike on the roster. The Ego+ RS claims to accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 2.6 seconds, breaching the superbike territory. What’s even more impressive is that the bike accelerates to blistering fast speeds while weighing a portly 260kg.
Longest Range- Energica Ego+ RS
Apart from the ludicrous acceleration, the Ego+ RS is also well known for its whopping 420km claimed range. It gets four riding modes: Eco, Standard, Wet and Sport. The Ego+ RS sources its juice from a 21.5kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and can be charged in just 60 minutes.
Smallest (And practical) In Size- Qubit X1
Bengaluru-based startup, Coppernicus Mobility, recently launched its foldable electric bike, the Qubit. It’s offered in two variants: X1 and X2. The X1 weighs just 15.5kg with the battery and offers a range of 30km with the pedal assist. However, the main talking point here is the compatibility of the Qubit e-bike. You can fold it up and carry it wherever you go, be it in your house, office or elsewhere. However, its pricing is a tad bit high at Rs 52,490 onwards.
Most Sporty- MotoE Energica Ego Corsa
We had to save the best for the last. Energica has been chosen by Dorna as the only electric motorcycle manufacturer for the Moto E series. The race bike is a charged-up (pun intended) version of the Energica Ego+ RS. It’s powered by a 20kWh lithium-ion battery and uses a Permanent Magnet AC motor. The claimed output is around 120kW with a top speed of 270kmph.
Goes without saying, the MotoE Energica Ego Corsa is sprung on a fully adjustable Ohlins suspension setup and drops the anchor using the 330mm twin front disc held by Brembo GP4 Nickel-plated four-piston monoblock radially mounted callipers.
BONUS!
Most Expensive Production Electric Motorcycle- Energica Ego+ RS
While there are other, more expensive electric motorcycles too, half of them aren’t production-ready. So, the Energica Ego+ RS saves the day. In Italy, it’s priced at EUR 26,140 without any options. That’s roughly around Rs 22.7 lakh. That’s Rs 80,000 shy of the Ducati Panigale V4 and Rs 1 lakh less than the recently launched Aprilia RSV4.
