It’s been less than a month since Fiat Brazil dropped a teaser for the Cronos, the sedan that will replace the ageing Linea. Now, the manufacturer has finally unveiled its latest sedan, which is expected to go on sale in the Latin American market beginning next year. When launched, the Cronos will go up against sedans like the Honda City and the Volkswagen Virtus (second-gen Vento), among others.
Unlike the Linea, which looked significantly different to the Punto hatchback it was based on, the Cronos borrows design cues from the Argo hatchback. At the front, the Cronos sports the heavily sculpted bonnet from the Argo. Dual barrel headlamps flank the grille which is split it half by a chrome line. Unlike the Argo, however, the Cronos gets a new front bumper which features a larger air dam with the fog lamp housing placed above it.
Look at it from the side, and you will notice a clean layout with a sharp shoulder line that runs across the profile of the sedan. The lower half of the doors have a concave profile which adds to its muscular design. The Cronos’ rear reminds us of the Audi A3. The bootlid gets an integrated spoiler, which along with the dual-tone bumpers lends the Cronos a premium look. Adding to its road presence are the split tail lamps with LED inserts.
Under the bonnet, the Cronos is likely to be sold with the same set of engines as the Argo - a 1.0-litre, 1.3-litre and 1.8-litre flex-fuel engines producing 72PS, 101PS and 135PS of power, respectively. These engines will be offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Will it come to India? So far, Fiat has not mentioned any plans of introducing the Cronos on Indian shores. We think it makes great sense for the manufacturer to bring the Cronos-Argo duo in India as the Linea and the Punto have not received any major update for a long time and are now unable to compete against their new-age rivals.
