Audi R8 Competition unveiled at LA

Audi is calling it the end to the current generation R8 with a last hurrah at the LA Auto Show. The farewell variant is called the R8 Competition and it promises to be a spectacular final edition to the highly successful supercar.

The R8 competition is a limited edition variant pumping out 578PS from the 5.2-litre V10. It makes the R8 competition the most powerful Audi production car ever, more than the RS7 and the R8 V10 plus. Audi claims that the R8 Competition can hit the 100kmph mark from standstill in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 320kmph. The R8 Competition gets the same 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox and all-wheel drive system.

The R8 Competition is inspired by the R8 LMS ultra race car that has won the 24 hours of Nurburgring and Spa. To make the R8 Competition the most purposeful of all R8s, Audi has given it extensive carbon fibre treatment. It gets matte black carbon fibre for the fixed rear wing, side blades, wing mirror caps, highlights on the centre tunnel, rear diffuser and front spoiler. Massive carbon ceramic brakes with bright red calipers on 19 inch gloss black alloy wheels stand out as well.

Audi will make on 60 units of this car will be manufactured at the R8 production facility in Neckarsulm, Germany. Deliveries will begin in 2015. Next generation of the R8 is some time away though, so this leaves a large void once the R8 Competition is sold out.
