While all the attention was on the price reveal of the Mahindra XUV700, the carmaker revealed a nice little surprise in the form of a new state-of-the-art SUV test track in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Called the Mahindra SUV Proving Track (MSPT), it will be the place where future Mahindra SUVs will be put through their paces, with plenty of tests. Here’s five cool facts about Mahindra’s new SUV proving grounds:
It’s Biggg
Designed by the IDIADA, (Institutd' Investigació Aplicada de l'Automòbil - Institute for Applied Automotive Research), this facility spans 454 acres of land. To put into perspective, this area can field more than a whopping 325 football grounds!
A Raft Of Test Combinations
A big testing facility like this needs multiple configurations, and it gets 20 specific tracks built to test a variety of factors. They include a zero percent slope high speed test track with a 43.7-degree parabolic banking, a braking pad with six surfaces, specific dry and wet tracks, and even a simulated city track.
Weather Simulation
To see how future Mahindra SUVs can handle nature’s elements, the facility has a dedicated full vehicle corrosion test facility with a humidity chamber. Here, they can simulate conditions such as rain, water wading, water splash, and even a dust storm.
Off-road Fun!
What’s a Mahindra SUV without its off-road prowess? The MSPT facility has a dedicated 4X4 Adventure track with 25 different challenges to really put the AWD and 4x4 drivetrains to the test. The tests include up and down, drive-thru forest/woods, riverbeds, mud, slush, sand, rock beds, and more.
No Need For Fuel Stops
A small but very valid gripe for dedicated facilities like this is that their positioning needs to be strategically placed where fuel stations are within close proximity. For the MSPT facility you don’t need to worry about that, as they’ve got their own fuel station at the facility. So testing can go ahead largely uninterrupted.
This becomes the second new test track in India after the NATRAX high-speed track was unveiled back in July, 2021. Sure, the MSPT facility is for Mahindra models only, but it is a positive for carmakers in India who don’t want to waste a variety of utility costs required to develop their models on tracks abroad.
