Ford India Brings Back The Automatic Gearbox For The Figo Hatchback

• The Titanium and a new auto-only Titanium+ variant get the automatic option.

It's been a while since the Ford Figo has had an automatic option since it was shelved back in January 2020, but the carmaker has now revived it for the automatic hatchback at prices starting from Rs 7.75 lakh (ex-showroom). Of course, the addition of the automatic gearbox means its variants will be priced at a premium over their manual counterparts. Here’s more on it in the table below:

The Figo automatic is sold in the Titanium and a new Titanium+ variant solely in petrol guise. Compared to its 5-speed manual counterpart, the Titanium AT variant is Rs 93,000 more expensive. The new Titanium+ garners a premium of Rs 1.07 lakh over the Titanium Blu top-spec petrol-manual variant. 

The Figo automatic utilizes the same 6-speed torque converter gearbox that’s present in the EcoSport sub-4metre SUV. Manual mode is activated by buttons on the gear knob instead of a proper tiptronic setup.

Sure, the Figo’s automatic option has returned, but it's not quite the same. It is now paired with the hatchback’s 96PS/119Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine instead of the 1.5-litre motor that is off the shelves. This is beneficial to the Figo since the hatchback is eligible for tax benefits as it measures under four metres and has an engine capacity below 1,200cc.

It features all the bells and whistles which include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (without Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), with embedded navigation, FordPass connected car tech with remote engine start-stop, four-speaker sound system, auto dimming inside rearview mirror, auto A/C, height-adjustable driver’s seat, and auto headlamps and wipers. Safety features consist of six airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking camera, and remote keyless entry with push-button start/stop. The automatic option also adds electronic stability control, hill launch assist and traction control to the mix.  

The addition of the torque converter automatic gearbox makes the Ford Figo the only hatchback in its segment to get such a conventional automatic option. Its rivals like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Swift, on the other hand, come with a relatively less refined AMT unit.
