A gear lock is a device that has two components, the stand and the lock. The stand is bolted onto the floor of your car. The stand can be swung around and the lock can be detached to accommodate the gear stick between it and then reattached to the stand.
The gear lock comes with a separate key which has to be used to open and swing the stand and remove the detachable lock. Once the lock has been reattached with the gear stick between it and the stand the key can be used to lock the gear stick in that position. The best gear to lock a car in would be neutral, so that the car cannot be driven forwards or backwards even if the engine has started and the steering unlocked. If you drive a manual car always park in gear if the car is on a slope
